Slime Keys are needed to unlock slime gates, which allow access to additional areas, such as the Moss Blanket. Slime Keys can be obtained by overfeeding gordos.
As of version 0.3.5c there are currently more Slime Keys than slime gates.

- Slime Keys are not absolutely essential to game progress, as one can sequence break into the Moss Blanket without one using the Jetpack.
